Susanne Hempel is a professor in the department of Population and Public Health Science, USC Keck School of Medicine. She is the director of the Southern California Evidence Review Center (, leading contracts for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Dr. Hempel oversees a large portfolio of evidence synthesis projects and leads large multi-site and multi-discipline projects. Products include systematic reviews, scoping reviews, evidence maps, and stakeholder panels. Dr. Hempel teaches Health Service Delivery in the US and the Capstone Project courses in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Dr. Hempel is an adjunct behavioral scientist at RAND and a professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School (PRGS) teaching Systematic Review Methodology and Applied Psychometrics. Prior, she worked at the Center for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD), University of York, UK. Her academic background is personality psychology with a PhD from the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.
